Home About JYO San Mateo JYO Japanese Youth Organization is a nonprofit recreational organization focused on building community through youth basketball. The JYO organization has been around since post World War II and was started by the Japanese American Gardeners Association to give children of Japanese ancestry the opportunity to play team sports. Initially the sport of choice was baseball but today basketball is the primary focus for more than 200 boys and girls in the greater San Mateo area grades 1st through 8th. San Mateo JYO is part of a broader Bay Area organization called NYBA Nikkei Youth Basketball Association that governs basketball league rules and play for youth starting in the 4th grade with participating organizations San Francisco Associates San Francisco Taisho San Jose CYS Tri City and Palo Alto PAYS.
