Mo'olelo Performing Arts Company

CREATE Mo`olelo exists to uncover and research stories within different communities and bring them to life on stage. PRODUCE Mo`olelo exists to produce original stories by contemporary playwrights and lesser-known stories by master playwrights. EDUCATE Mo`olelo exists to educate youth in technical theatre and design, exposing them to potential careers, and grooming this new generation of theatre artists so they can tell stories on stage with integrity. Mo`olelo Performing Arts Company was established January 5, 2004 with the purpose of broadening the scope of San Diego's cultural environment. Through our professional, socially conscious theater productions and arts education programs, Mo`olelo responds to community needs for greater diversity on stage; enhanced educational opportunities for our youth; increased paid theater employment for resident professional artists, and eco-friendlier practices on stage that do not damage the long-term health of our communities. We are deliberate to provide cultural enrichment opportunities to in-need populations. In our eight-year history we have produced 16 full-length plays that have focused upon San Diego's diversity by telling stories featuring African American, Asian American, Latino/a, Middle Eastern, military and veteran, refugee and immigrant, and/or disability voices. We've served over 33,000 audiences, ages 7 to 91, from Point Loma to Julian, South Bay to Oceanside. We've created over 200 seasonal, professional jobs for local artists and developed three unique arts education programs. Our programs reach deep into the community to generate participation and build bridges across societal divides. Mo`olelo means story in Hawaiian, and is a reflection of our vision to present powerful stories that are as diverse as the Islands of Hawaii.
