Last week more than 300 people gathered at FIRM to celebrate 50 Years of the Hmong American Legacy! Our goal was to create a community-centered event where everyone, especially the most vulnerable in our communities, could show up without barriers. No tickets. No cost. Just free admission, good food, and cultural pride. The evening featured prizes, performances and two proclamations recognizing the impact of Hmong Americans in Fresno; one from District 5 Councilmember Brandon Vang and another from District 7 Councilmember Nelson Esparza. This celebration came to life through the dedication of volunteers, performers, and the planning committee. And also through the generosity of those who believe in an inclusive Central Valley: • Perinatal Equity Initiative • Maykou’s Decorations & Party Rentals • The Center at Sierra Health Foundation • California Poison Control Center • Oil Guys • Hmong Mini Mall • MinTea Fresno (Barstow Ave.) • Richard Live Kong Vang • Sia’s Place Wellness Center • Vilai Yang • Linda Vang • The family of Neng Thao • KBIF 900 AM • Bingo Pure Water Thank you! Here's to the next 50 years of possibilities! (fb)

Remembering Neng Thao The City of Fresno declared in 2017 that May 29 would be celebrated as “Neng Thao Day.” Today, we honor and remember the remarkable life of Neng Thao - A young man whose spirit, leadership, and compassion continue to inspire. Neng was an exceptional Hmong teen who led with humility and strength in every part of his life – his faith, friendships, academics, and community. He tragically passed away in an accident before he could graduate as Valedictorian from Edison High School and begin his journey at UC Berkeley. To carry forward his legacy, the Neng Thao Memorial Scholarship was established in 2018. This annual scholarship supports Southeast Asian graduating high school seniors who plan to attend college in the fall and are committed to give back to the Southeast Asian community – reflecting Neng’s deep commitment to education and uplifting his community. If you would like to contribute to this meaningful cause, please visit FIRM website at https://firminc.org/donations/donate/ and select the Neng Thao Memorial Scholarship Fund. Neng’s light continues to shine through the lives he touched and the future he still helps shape. We remember him today and always. (fb)
