Today we would like to honor and remember our only recipient who was injured in war-time (Iraq) and died from his injuries. Meet USMC Combat Veteran Justin R. By the time we met Justin he was in a rehab facility in Ohio, doing his Marine Corps best to recover from his injuries. A Marine through and through, Justin loved it when the ladies visited! Although he could not form words due to his TBI, he was VERY communicative! We talked, told war stories, and we laughed, but more importantly we honored him with love. On the day I got the call that Justin had gone to be with the Lord, I was in Kentucky and Justin's brand new wheelchair was in our warehouse ready to be delivered to him. It broke my heart that we never got to give him his chair, but his mom made sure we were able to pay it forward. Through wonderful Non-profits like WFW, the USO and others, Justin was never left behind. He had so much memorabilia on is walls, they were truly the walls of fame! From Toby Keith to Gary Sinese, I think everyone visited Justin! Yes, of course, especially a lot of lovely ladies! Oorah! We all made Justin feel loved and honored until the very end. I had a special bond with Justin, being we were both in Baghdad at the same time, and I was blessed to be able to visit him on two occasions and get to know him through his mother who became a wonderful friend. She was his staunch advocate and kept everyone on their toes around Justin. Wheelchairs for Warriors also honored Justin with his own walk of fame marker in Galveston, TX, through the efforts of Walkways for Warriors. It was an honorable ceremony attended by our local community, our local politicians, local military, and even Justin's mom was in attendance. Sadly, that project will soon be torn up bc the sidewalks need to be repaired and Justin's memorial will be gone, but his spirit lives on. In my office I have a painted American Flag that Justin painted in his art class and I remember him not just today, but every day.
