Alumni Association of The City College of New York
The Alumni Association of The City College of New York (AACCNY) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the welfare of The City College of New York and its alumni. Its mission involves fostering meaningful connections among alumni, students, faculty, and staff while advancing the principles of public higher education.
History
The Alumni Association's origins date back to the first graduating class of 1853, when members formed the Associate Alumni of The Free Academy. After The Free Academy became The College of the City of New York in 1866, the organization's name changed accordingly. It was formally incorporated on March 7, 1913, as the Associate Alumni of the College of the City of New York, Inc.[1][2].
Structure and Activities
The Alumni Association is governed by a Board of Directors and operates independently. It includes 15 affiliate groups catering to diverse interests, such as the Alumni Varsity Association, Black Alumni Group, and Science Alumni Group[1][3]. In recognition of alumni's growing geographical diversity, regional chapters were established. Notable chapters include Washington, D.C.; Palm Beach/South Florida; Northern California; and Houston[3].
Objectives and Programs
The organization focuses on several key objectives:
- Engagement: It organizes intellectual, cultural, and social networking events to foster connections among its stakeholders[1][2].
- Recognition: The Association honors outstanding alumni achievements through awards like the Townsend Harris Medal and Alumni Service Awards[2].
- Support: It provides scholarships, mentoring, and networking opportunities for current students[1][2].
- Promotion: The Association actively promotes The City College of New York and its interests in all endeavors[1][2].
Notable Alumni
The City College of New York is renowned for its accomplished graduates, including Nobel laureates like Julius Axelrod, Kenneth Arrow, and Herbert Hauptman, and notable figures in politics, arts, and business[4].
Diversity and Inclusion Statement
The Alumni Association is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive community where all alumni feel valued and can contribute fully[1].
