Ibsen’s celebrated play explores the ways that societal expectations restrict individuals, especially women. Its success when it premiered in 1879 thrust drama firmly into the modern age. Amy Herzog’s thrilling, compact and devastatingly contemporary adaptation makes freshly relevant a story that shocked audiences and brought forth a new era of theatre. Principal Roles: 3 Women 3 Men Nora Helmer - age: 22 - 35. A seemingly happy wife and mother who becomes increasingly disillusioned in those roles. She holds a secret. An opportunity for an actor to dig deep and bring forth subtle changes in her heart and mind as the play progresses. Torvald Helmer - age: 25 - 40. Nora’s husband and a newly promoted bank manager. He sees Nora as a dependent, frivolous child. He is concerned about his social reputation and possible scandal from Nora's deception. Kristine Linde - age: 30 - 40. Nora's childhood friend, a practical and independent woman who seeks a more meaningful life than as a widow. She has a difficult past and is drawn to Krogstad, who is also her former love. Dr. Rank - age: 30’s – 40’s. A close friend of Torvald and a confidante to Nora. He is terminally ill and secretly in love with Nora. Nils Krogstad - age: 30’s - 45. A bank employee who also holds a secret. He attempts to blackmail Nora, then has a change of heart. Anne-Marie - age: 40 - 60. Nora’s former nanny and now is nanny to Nora’s children.
