Description

National Society Daughters of the American Revolution

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) is a lineage-based membership service organization for women who are directly descended from a patriot of the American Revolutionary War. Founded on October 11, 1890, the DAR is a non-profit organization dedicated to historic preservation, education, patriotism, and community service.

History

The DAR was established during a period of renewed interest in American history, following the centennial of President George Washington's inauguration. The organization was formed after the Sons of the American Revolution refused to admit women as members. Founders Mary Smith Lockwood, Ellen Hardin Walworth, Eugenia Washington, and Mary Desha created the society to recognize the contributions of women to American history. The first meeting was held at the home of Mary Smith Lockwood in Washington, D.C.

Membership

Membership in the DAR is open to women aged 18 and older who can demonstrate direct descent from a patriot of the American Revolution. This includes soldiers, government officials, and others who actively supported the cause. The organization has over 190,000 members across the United States and other countries.

Focus and Activities

  • Historic Preservation: DAR maintains a genealogical library and bookstore at its headquarters, providing resources for family research and historical scholarship.
  • Education: The organization supports several schools that specialize in meeting particular educational needs, including Berry College, Crossnore School, Kate Duncan Smith DAR School, Hillside School, and Hindman Settlement School.
  • Community Service: DAR members engage in various civic projects, such as volunteering at veterans' facilities and supporting service personnel overseas. They also participate in naturalization ceremonies and promote Constitution Week annually.
  • Scholarships: The DAR offers numerous scholarships in fields like nursing, law, business, and American history, focusing on supporting educational goals.

Structure

The DAR is governed by a leadership structure that includes a President General and various national and local chapters. The organization is affiliated with the Children of the American Revolution, another lineage-based society.

Publications

The DAR publishes American Spirit Magazine and Daughters Magazine, among other resources, to promote historical awareness and community engagement.

Headquarters

The DAR's headquarters are located at Memorial Continental Hall in Washington, D.C., where members can access historical resources and participate in educational programs.

The organization's motto is "God, Home, and Country," reflecting its commitment to patriotism and community service.
