Civil Air Patrol

Overview

Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a congressionally chartered, federally supported nonprofit corporation that serves as the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force (USAF). Founded on December 1, 1941, CAP was established to mobilize the nation's civilian aviation resources for national defense during World War II. Today, it operates in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Mission and Purpose

Civil Air Patrol's mission is to serve America's communities by providing emergency response, aviation and ground services, youth development, and promoting air, space, and cyber power through aerospace education. CAP condenses its roles into three core program areas:

• Aerospace Education: CAP provides innovative resources and programs for K-12 students to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
• Cadet Programs: These programs focus on leadership development and personal growth for young members, offering myriad activities and opportunities for skill-building and community involvement.
• Emergency Services: CAP is involved in search and rescue operations, disaster relief, transportation of critical materials, and homeland security support.

Organization and Structure

CAP is organized in a hierarchical structure, mirroring the U.S. Air Force, with ranks and units similar to the military. It consists of eight regions, further divided into 52 wings (each corresponding to a state, plus Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia), and then into groups, squadrons, and flights. The national headquarters is located at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama.

History

During World War II, CAP played a significant role in antisubmarine patrols and saved numerous lives through search and rescue efforts. After the war, its role evolved to include promoting civil aviation and supporting local and national emergencies. In 1948, CAP was formally established as the auxiliary of the newly created U.S. Air Force. In recognition of its service during World War II, CAP members were collectively awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2014.

It is recognized as part of the U.S. Air Force's Total Force and performs various missions such as aerial target training, counterdrug operations, and disaster response support. CAP also conducts humanitarian service missions in conjunction with organizations like the Red Cross.

CAP maintains a fleet of aircraft and unmanned aerial systems, which are utilized for its diverse missions. The organization relies on volunteer efforts and has more than 38,000 adult members and over 28,000 cadets participating in its programs and operations across the United States.
