Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation
The Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation, also known as the Irish Cultural Center and McClelland Library, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Irish and Celtic cultures in the United States.
Mission
The foundation's mission is to create a link between the people of Arizona and those of Ireland and other Celtic cultures. It aims to provide a variety of educational and cultural programs that highlight the rich heritage of Ireland and other Celtic nations.
Overview
Located in Phoenix, Arizona, the foundation operates within the Irish Cultural Center and McClelland Library, which is situated in Margaret Hance Park. The facilities were developed through a collaborative effort between the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, the Arizona Department of Transportation, and a Sister City relationship with Ennis, County Clare, Ireland.
Programs and Offerings
The Irish Cultural Center offers a diverse range of programs and activities throughout the year. These include:
- Academy Classes: Educational courses covering various aspects of Irish culture, such as language, crafts, and traditions.
- Exhibits: Displays highlighting Irish history, art, and literature.
- Lectures and Special Events: Events that celebrate Irish heritage, including music, dance performances, and festivals.
- Genealogical Research: The McClelland Library serves as a leading center for genealogical research related to Irish heritage, providing access to extensive collections of manuscripts, books, and databases.
Facilities
The McClelland Irish Library is a three-story building designed to replicate a 12th-century Norman castle from Ireland. It features an entrance inspired by St. Brigid's Church in County Clare, and its arches are made from authentic Irish Blue Limestone. The library houses a comprehensive collection of Irish and Celtic literature and materials, offering resources for genealogical research and cultural studies.
Financial Overview
The foundation is supported primarily through donations and contributions, with additional revenue from program services and rental property income. It operates as a tax-deductible charity under section 501(c) of the U.S. tax code, classified within the category of Human Services—Multipurpose and Other, as defined by the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE).
Governance
The organization is led by a board of directors composed of local community leaders and business executives. Key figures have included Paul Ahern, Jim Daugherty, and Francis Leavy, among others. The foundation's leadership works to ensure that the cultural and educational programs remain vibrant and accessible to the community.
By offering a unique blend of cultural events, educational resources, and facilities dedicated to Irish heritage, the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation has established itself as a prominent entity for promoting Celtic culture in the United States.
