Camp Peniel began with Gordon and Alice Whitelock's vision and prayers in the 1940s. They started taking children camping in the Piney Woods near Houston, Texas, while Gordon worked for Young Life and pastored a church in Almeda, Texas. By 1945, they leased land for the camp at Double Lake in East Texas. The success of these early endeavors led to the formation of a state charter as a non-profit organization on December 11, 1946. In 1960, the camp acquired the Silver Hills Ranch with 256 acres near Marble Falls, Texas, expanding over the years to a total of 382 acres[2].
Mission and Purpose
Camp Peniel aims to challenge each camper to strengthen their personal relationship with Christ while providing an experiential and fun environment. It offers activities such as swimming in a spring-fed lake, hiking, horseback riding, and a zipline. The camp emphasizes developing a deepening commitment to Jesus Christ through well-designed programs and committed Christian leaders[2][3].
