B'nai B'rith Youth Organization
The B'nai B'rith Youth Organization (BBYO) is an international Jewish youth movement that was originally founded by B'nai B'rith, one of the oldest Jewish service organizations in the world. BBYO is a independent entity today, but its roots trace back to the early 20th century when it was established as part of B'nai B'rith's efforts to engage young people in Jewish life and community service.
History
BBYO evolved from two main components: the Aleph Zadik Aleph (AZA) for boys and the B'nai B'rith Girls (BBG) for girls. AZA was established in 1924 by Sam Beber and others who envisioned a fraternal organization that would reach Jewish teens wherever they were located. BBG was formed in 1927 in San Francisco. Both organizations were designed to emulate college fraternities and sororities, offering a space for Jewish teenagers to develop leadership skills, community service, and Jewish identity[2][4][5].
In its early years, BBYO expanded rapidly, establishing chapters across North America and internationally. By the mid-20th century, it had become a major international youth organization. However, by the late 1990s and early 2000s, BBYO scaled back its global operations due to a shift in priorities and its decision to become independent from B'nai B'rith. This change allowed BBYO to focus more on its North American activities while maintaining a smaller global presence[2].
Revitalization and Growth
In recent years, BBYO has undergone a revitalization, expanding its reach both nationally and internationally. The organization has opened chapters in over 63 countries worldwide over the past two decades and engages around 70,000 teens globally. BBYO has focused on reaching Jewish teens wherever they are, including in small towns and rural areas. This growth has led to BBYO re-emphasizing its original vision of building community for Jewish teens around the world[2].
Programs and Activities
BBYO offers a variety of programs aimed at developing leadership skills, fostering a sense of Jewish identity, and encouraging community service among its members. These include leadership training, social events, volunteer opportunities, and educational programs that help teens engage with Jewish culture and values. The organization also supports initiatives that promote democracy, civic engagement, and social responsibility among young people[2].
Governance and Structure
BBYO operates independently, with its own governance structure and leadership. It continues to maintain strong ties with the broader Jewish community but operates autonomously from its parent organization, B'nai B'rith[2]. The organization is structured to allow local chapters and international chapters to operate with a degree of autonomy, enabling them to tailor programs to their specific needs and environments.
EIN and Nonprofit Status
BBYO operates as a nonprofit organization under the EIN 912139981. As a 501(c)(3) organization, it relies on donations and support from members and benefactors to sustain its programs and expand its reach[2].
