Road Runners Club of America
The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) is the oldest and largest national association of running organizations in the United States. Founded on February 22, 1958, it serves as a non-profit educational organization committed to promoting the sport of running nationwide[1][2]. The RRCA operates with a 501(c)(3) status, with its headquarters in Arlington (Rosslyn), Virginia[1].
Mission and Vision
The RRCA's mission is to champion the development of community-based running clubs and events that serve runners of all ages and abilities in pursuit of health and competition[2][4]. Its vision is to empower everyone to run, fostering a culture of inclusivity and support for runners across the United States[4].
Structure and Membership
As of the latest data, the RRCA comprises over 2,700 running club and event members, representing more than 250,000 individual runners[2]. It also includes over 7,000 RRCA Certified Distance Running Coaches and hundreds of certified race directors[2]. The organization encourages individuals to join local member running clubs where possible, ensuring that all club members receive the full benefits of RRCA membership[1].
Programs and Services
The RRCA offers a range of programs and services aimed at supporting runners and promoting the sport:
- Coaching Certification Program: Provides two levels of coaching certification for adults from beginners to sub-elites, focusing on both physiological and psychological aspects of running[5].
- Road Scholars Program: Offers grants to promising post-collegiate athletes to support their development and competitive participation in distance running[2][4].
- Kids Run the Nation Program: A 10-week curriculum and small grant fund for youth running programs, aiming to encourage physical activity among children[1][5].
- Runner Friendly Community Program: Recognizes communities that have made significant efforts to create environments supportive of running[1].
- Liability Insurance: Provides insurance coverage for over 10,000 running events annually, helping to mitigate risks and ensure safe competitions[5].
Awards and Recognition
The RRCA presents various awards annually to recognize outstanding contributions to the running community, including:
- National Running Awards: Acknowledges the service and commitment of volunteers, runners, and clubs across multiple categories[1].
- Hall of Fame: Established in 1971 to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to long distance running[1].
Historical Achievements
Since its inception, the RRCA has played a crucial role in promoting women's running by hosting women-only races and advocating for equal prize structures[1]. It also contributed to significant legislative changes, such as lobbying for the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, which impacted sports governance in the U.S.[2].
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
The RRCA values diversity, equity, and inclusion by ensuring equal opportunities for all participants. It believes the sport benefits from diverse leadership and contributions[4].
