Composed in 1902, Josef Suk’s Elegie, Op. 23, is a brief but deeply expressive work for piano trio, written originally as incidental music for an event memoralizing Czech poet Julius Zeyer, whose writing—informed by regional folk legends—had a profound impact on Suk's music. The piece reflects Suk’s early Romantic style, closely connected to his mentor and father-in-law, Antonín Dvořák. The Sextet for Strings from Richard Strauss’s final opera, Capriccio (subtitled "A Conversation Piece for Music"), serves as its prelude, performed onstage before the curtain rises. It sets the opera's conflict in motion, introducing a dramatic work that asks the timeless question: Which is the greater art, poetry or music? Composed in 1942, the Sextet offers a nostalgic look back at 19th-century chamber music amid the turbulence of the 20th century.
