Composed in 1902, Josef Suk’s Elegie, Op. 23, is a brief but deeply expressive work for piano trio, written originally as incidental music for an event memoralizing Czech poet Julius Zeyer, whose writing—informed by regional folk legends—had a profound impact on Suk's music. The piece reflects Suk’s early Romantic style, closely connected to his mentor and father-in-law, Antonín Dvořák. This 2020 performance from Alice Tully Hall features pianist Juho Pohjonen, violinist Adam Barnett-Hart, and cellist Jan Vogler. Hear more of Suk’s chamber music at Boccherini, Koechlin, and Suk on April 10. The Sextet for Strings from Richard Strauss’s final opera, Capriccio (subtitled "A Conversation Piece for Music"), serves as its prelude, performed onstage before the curtain rises. It sets the opera's conflict in motion, introducing a dramatic work that asks the timeless question: Which is the greater art, poetry or music? Composed in 1942, the Sextet offers a nostalgic look back at 19th-century chamber music amid the turbulence of the 20th century. This 2016 performance from Alice Tully Hall features violinists Erin Keefe and Ani Kavafian, violists Yura Lee and Matthew Lipman, and cellists Nicholas Canellakis and David Finckel (CMS's Co-Artistic Director). Hear the Sextet live at CMS's Souvenir de Florence concert: Sunday, May 4 at 5:00 pm. Tickets available in our bio. #classicalmusic #strauss #violin #strings #nycmusic #lincolncenter #opera (fb)
