Reel Connections for Kids

Overview

Reel Connections for Kids is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Hardy, Virginia, dedicated to providing underserved children aged 8 to 12 with hands-on fishing experiences. The organization aims to connect these children with fellow anglers while educating them about fishing, conservation, and water safety.

History

Reel Connections for Kids was established in 2022 as a project of the Smith Mountain Striper Club. Initially focused on hosting a single fishing event, the initiative arose from the recognition that many children in Franklin County and Bedford County lacked access to recreational activities. Notably, statistics indicated that 22% of children in Franklin County and 13.2% in Bedford County were living below the poverty line. In response, the Smith Mountain Striper Club organized the first "Take a Kid Fishing" event on June 25, 2022, which successfully connected 16 children with professional fishing guides for a day of fishing and education. The overwhelming success of this event led to the formation of Reel Connections for Kids as an independent nonprofit organization.

Mission

The mission of Reel Connections for Kids is to provide opportunities for underserved children and their families to engage in enjoyable, educational fishing experiences. The organization focuses on:

  • Teaching useful fishing skills
  • Fostering connections with fellow anglers
  • Instilling an appreciation for water conservation and safety

Programs and Events

Reel Connections for Kids conducts several annual events designed to engage children and foster community relationships:

  • Take a Kid Fishing Day: Held in May or June, this event invites children to spend a day on Smith Mountain Lake with professional fishing guides. Each child participates in fishing activities, receives a new fishing rod and tackle box, and learns about fishing techniques and conservation. Lunch is provided, along with the opportunity to take home their catch.

  • ReConnect Event: This event takes place each September or October and serves as a reunion for participants and their families. It features various educational stations focused on fishing skills such as lure painting, knot tying, and casting. Participants also enjoy a ride on a fire boat and receive a hoodie as a memento of the day.

In addition to these signature events, Reel Connections for Kids is dedicated to expanding its offerings to include programs for veterans and initiatives that accommodate young anglers with disabilities. Future goals include providing scholarships for students interested in environmental conservation and protection.

Board of Directors

The organization is led by a volunteer board, which includes:

  • President: Kevin Bugg
  • Vice-President: Chad Gilmore
  • Treasurer: Scott Newman
  • Secretary: Ken Britske
  • At-Large Members: Mark Oliver, Karen Hughes, John Mathena, Gary Harrison

Community Impact

Through its activities, Reel Connections for Kids aims to create lasting connections between young anglers, the Smith Mountain Lake community, and the natural environment. By focusing on underserved populations, the organization seeks to ensure that all children have the opportunity to experience the joys of fishing and the benefits of outdoor engagement. The initiative not only promotes individual skill development but also fosters a sense of community, friendship, and environmental stewardship among participants.
