Overview
Aspetuck Land Trust Inc. is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to preserving and conserving open spaces, including farm and forest lands, primarily in southwestern Connecticut. Founded in 1966, it is one of the earliest land trusts established in the state of Connecticut.
Mission
The mission of Aspetuck Land Trust is to protect land forever and connect people to the natural world. The organization focuses on preserving natural resources, such as rivers, streams, and woodlands, as well as historic and scenic sites in the towns of Easton, Weston, Fairfield, Westport, and, following a merger with the Monroe Land Trust in 2021, Monroe.
Operations
Aspetuck Land Trust maintains over 45 nature preserves, accessible to the public for activities like hiking and bird watching. These preserves span across several towns and showcase the region's diverse natural environments. The trust also engages in active land management practices, such as mowing meadows to protect bird habitats, restoring river banks, and removing invasive plant species to ensure the health and biodiversity of the conserved lands.
Conservation Efforts
As of recent years, the trust has conserved over 2,200 acres of land, with a significant increase in protected areas since 2020. This includes land owned outright and held under conservation easements. The organization's efforts are supported by a strong membership base, which currently includes over 1,700 members. Membership donations are crucial for the trust's ability to acquire and maintain protected lands.
Governance and Affiliations
Aspetuck Land Trust is governed by a Board of Directors representing the communities it serves. It is a member of the Land Trust Alliance and participates in regional conservation initiatives like the Hudson to Housatonic Initiative (H2H), emphasizing its commitment to broader environmental goals.
Educational Initiatives
In addition to conservation, the trust conducts educational programs designed to inspire appreciation for nature among both children and adults. These programs include guided hikes, a Jr. Ranger Program, and the creation of a Natural Playground to engage younger generations with the outdoors.
Merger and Expansion
In 2021, Aspetuck Land Trust merged with the Monroe Land Trust and Tree Conservancy, expanding its conservation area to include Monroe. This merger marked an important step in extending the organization's impact beyond its original focal areas, solidifying its role as a key player in regional land conservation.
History
Aspetuck Land Trust was formally established in October 1966, with its first organizational meeting at the home of John Ripley Forbes. The trust received its first land gift in 1967, a 20-acre donation now known as the Leonard Schine Preserve. Since then, it has grown to become one of the most active land trusts in Fairfield County. Its IRS non-profit status was granted in 1967, allowing it to pursue its mission with tax-deductible contributions.
Overall, Aspetuck Land Trust plays a vital role in preserving the natural beauty and environmental health of southwestern Connecticut, contributing to a sustainable and green future for local communities.
