Stefano Imbert, the Mint Theater Company's playbill illustrator, kindly shared his design process and illustrations from Mary Broome circa 2012. "While discussing possible visuals for the play, Jonathan (Bank) and I realized that this image should convey the idea of Mary Broome, the housemaid of the Timbrell family, looming over the household with a secret that can compromise their respectability with a scandal. My first idea was to use Mary’s character somehow disrupting the Timbrell’s sound social life imagining Mary as a silhouette with the family drawn right inside the line that defines her shape. Another image was a stuffy drawing room with Mary about to serve the afternoon tea, casting a long shadow over the Timbrell’s. Neither of us were too happy with these early sketches, but I was sure that in the final image we needed to see Mary interacting with the family who employed her. During my research for period maids, I stumbled across an old turn of the century black and white photograph depicting a housemaid holding a tray with teacups and a silver teapot. The photo was great and pertinent, but how could I make clear that the maid was about to disrupt the tranquil life of her employers? Discussing the image with Jonathan, we realized that at that point of the story, Mary was literally holding the Timbrell’s respectability in her hands. Why not, then, have the household placed directly on the silver tea tray? After sketching this surreal image, we quickly realized that this was the way to go."
