Elmwood Cemetery is connected to the film industry through several of the individuals buried here, including Miss Ginny Moon. Virginia Bethel Moon was in school in Ohio when the Civil War started. She was firmly in the secessionist camp, and engineered it so that she would be sent home to her father's farm in Whitehaven so that she could spy for the Confederacy. She did, but to what degree she was helpful, it's hard to say. She spent several weeks imprisoned in Cincinnati and was then sent to Memphis on parole. She roamed about the Confederacy, trying to get any information on Union troop movements that she could. She was again imprisoned in New Orleans, but she flirted with the guards so relentlessly that they were glad to see her go. There are many anecdotes about her espionage activities. After the war, she ran a boarding house for bachelors in Memphis. Miss Ginny then moved to New York's Greenwich Village. In her 70s, she decided that she wanted to act again, now for the new silent film industry. She found producer Jesse Lasky and asked for a job. In response to his inquiries about her ability to act, she informed him that, at age 75, she had already "acted all the parts." She appeared in The Spanish Dancer and Robin Hood. She died at 81, and she was brought home to Elmwood Cemetery for burial. #Memphis #elmwoodcemeterymemphis #classicfilms (fb)
