San Francisco International Piano Festival

The San Francisco International Piano Festival (SFIPF) is a prominent annual event dedicated to celebrating and showcasing piano music. Founded in 2017, the festival has quickly established itself as a significant platform for both emerging and established pianists. It aims to enrich the cultural landscape of the Bay Area by presenting a diverse array of performances across multiple genres and styles.

Festival Overview

The festival has received recognition for its innovative programming and inclusive approach, which integrates both contemporary and classical repertoire. Throughout its history, SFIPF has featured numerous world premieres and local artist debuts, contributing to the rich tapestry of the region’s musical culture. The festival is characterized by its commitment to accessibility, having presented free programming to the public in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, allowing for an inclusive experience for all attendees.

Artistic Collaboration

A unique aspect of the SFIPF is its emphasis on collaboration among artists. The festival often partners with various musical organizations, such as Young Chamber Musicians and Old First Concerts, to present a wide range of concert formats, from formal recitals to informal gatherings. This collaborative philosophy promotes a sense of community among musicians, who support and inspire one another rather than compete against each other.

Venues and Programming

Performances are held at a variety of venues, carefully selected to match the repertoire and enhance the audience's experience. Locations have included established concert halls and more intimate spaces, allowing for a diverse range of musical encounters. The festival programming typically spans a broad chronological spectrum, covering music from the Baroque era to contemporary compositions.

In 2022, the festival celebrated the 300th anniversary of J.S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier along with the world premiere of a new work by Bay Area composer Kurt Erickson, exemplifying its commitment to both historical and modern piano literature.

Upcoming Events

Continuing its tradition of excellence, the festival is gearing up for its fifth anniversary in 2025, coinciding with the San Francisco International Piano Competition. This dual event promises to showcase both established artists and young talents from around the globe, furthering its mission to elevate musical artistry and foster connections within the international music community.

Overall, the San Francisco International Piano Festival represents a significant cultural entity within the Bay Area, providing enriching musical experiences that resonate with a wide audience, celebrating the art of piano performance in all its forms.

A welcome note from Jeffrey LaDeur Artistic Director San Francisco International Piano Festival Faure Les Franais Welcome to the 7th annual San Francisco International Piano FestivalIt is my honor and privilege to share this season with you our wonderful audience and supporters. The 2024 festival speaks and sings with a distinctly French accent as we celebrate the life and music of Gabriel Faure 18451924 in his centennial year. Not only was Faure an inspired voice in of 19th and 20th century music his oeuvre occupies a unique position in the repertoireit is equally beloved and unknown.
