Fraternal Order of Eagles
The Fraternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E.) is an international charitable non-profit organization founded on February 6, 1898, in Seattle, Washington. It was established by six theater owners who initially formed "The Order of Good Things," later changing their name to the Fraternal Order of Eagles. The organization's formation was motivated by a desire to foster camaraderie and mutual support among members, originally those involved in the performing arts.
History and Development
Early meetings were conducted on local theater stages, often followed by social gatherings. As the organization grew, the bald eagle was adopted as its official emblem. The Fraternal Order of Eagles played a significant role in promoting important social causes, including the establishment of Mother's Day in the United States and providing early impetus for the creation of Social Security.
Membership and Structure
The F.O.E. boasts nearly 800,000 members and more than 1,500 locations across the United States and Canada. The organization is divided into local units known as "aeries." The women's auxiliary was established in 1927. Members are united by the principles of liberty, truth, justice, and equality, with a mission to improve human life by reducing hardship and promoting peace, prosperity, gladness, and hope.
Philanthropy
The Fraternal Order of Eagles is renowned for its charitable work. Each year, it donates over $10 million to various charities, conducting fundraisers for eight major national charities. These include funds dedicated to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, spinal cord injuries, children, a memorial foundation, and the Golden Eagle Fund. The organization's philosophy is to return 100% of the monies raised in the form of grants, ensuring that all collected funds are directly used for charitable purposes.
Impact and Legacy
The F.O.E. has had a profound impact on community life through its extensive charity work and advocacy for social causes. Its influence extends beyond financial contributions, as members engage in various community activities, providing support for medical research and patient care. The organization continues to grow, maintaining its core values and remaining a significant force in both local and national charitable endeavors.
