FOR EXAMPLE, MARIA GUARCHAJ PERECHU AND HER TWO SONS, ROLAND AND ABDIAS, WERE ONE OF THE FIRST FAMILIES SPONSORED IN THE PROGRAM. PRIOR TO THE SPONSORSHIP, THE FAMILY WAS VERY POOR AFTER THE HUSBAND ABANDONED THE FAMILY. THE BOYS WERE OFTEN FORCED TO BEG FOR BREAD AROUND THE COMMUNITY DUE TO LACK OF FOOD, AND ROLAND STOPPED ATTENDING CLASSES BY 3RD GRADE BECAUSE THE FAMILY COULD NOT AFFORD THE FEES. SINCE BEING IN THE PROGRAM, BOTH BOYS HAVE BEEN ENROLLED IN SCHOOL AND ROLAND HAS MADE UP ONE OF THE YEARS MISSED DURING HIS ABSENCE. THE FAMILY HAS BEEN ABLE TO INVEST IN A MODEST FOOD STORAGE SO THAT THEY DO NOT GO HUNGRY. MARIA HAS BEEN ABLE TO FIND MORE STABLE EMPLOYMENT NOW THAT HER FAMILY'S BASIC NEEDS HAVE BEEN MET AND SHE DOES NOT NEED TO WATCH HER SONS DURING THE DAY AS THEY ARE AT SCHOOL. THIS IS A COMMON STORY ACROSS ALL FAMILIES IN THE PROGRAM.
