Hillsborough Literacy Council, Inc.
Since 1986, HLC's mission has been to provide adult non-readers in the Tampa Bay, Florida, area with free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring in Adult Basic Literacy. A secondary program in English for Speakers of Other Languages has been in place since 1993 and likewise provides individual tutors or group instruction to non-English speakers. Volunteer tutors in both programs receive extensive training in the curricula developed by Laubach Literacy, an international organization, and tutors use materials published by Laubach. HLC provides ongoing support and materials to volunteer tutors. HLC is an affiliate of the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library.

The Hillsborough Literacy Council provides an opportunity for people to make a difference happen right in front of their eyes. We train and match literacy volunteers who in turn help residents of Hillsborough County benefit from improved literacy andor English language skills. Each year we help hundreds of people achieve their goals related to reading and communicating in English.
