As a child, Daphne Zhu watched her mother shoulder the weight of caring for her grandmother who was living with Alzheimer’s disease. Today, the experiences Daphne had as a caregiver inspires her volunteer efforts and work as an Alzheimer's researcher. Daphne began volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Association upon realizing that groundbreaking science wasn’t always reaching communities impacted by the disease. Older adults she connected with weren’t familiar with clinical trials or new treatments for early Alzheimer’s. “I got involved with the Alzheimer’s Association because of our shared mission of equitable health literacy, leading me to partner with them on outreach programs and develop new presentations for our current research landscape.” Daphne finds fulfillment in volunteering as a community educator and community representative. “I’ve sat with families who only learned about Alzheimer’s after years of misdiagnoses or cultural stigma, when their loved ones were already in late stages.
