Description

The American Museum of the House Cat

The American Museum of the House Cat is a nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating the cultural significance and history of the domesticated house cat in the United States. It is one of only two museums in the country dedicated solely to cats.

History and Collection

The museum was curated by Dr. Harold Sims, a retired professor of education, who spent over 35 years collecting art, artifacts, and literature related to cats. The collection includes items from ancient to modern times, ranging from a bronze figure of the feline goddess Bastet dating back to 600 BC to a petrified cat found in a medieval English home, as well as artifacts like vintage toys, carousel cats, and artworks by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol[1][2][3].

Mission and Operations

The museum serves as an educational, historical, and aesthetic venue for cat enthusiasts. Its mission includes the collection, preservation, exhibition, and interpretation of art and artifacts related to the house cat. The museum is supported by proceeds from admissions and donations, which also fund the nearby Catman2 no-kill, cage-free cat shelter[3][4].

Operations and Impact

Open from April to December, the museum welcomes visitors with self-guided tours, though curated tours are available upon arrangement[3]. All profits from the museum support local cat welfare initiatives, specifically the Catman2 shelter, reinforcing the museum's role in both education and community service[2][3]. The museum has attracted thousands of visitors over the years, becoming a unique cultural and educational point of interest in Western North Carolina[4].

Community Engagement

In addition to its exhibits, the museum features a research library focused on the history and domestication of house cats[3]. It also hosts a gift shop offering a variety of cat-themed items, with proceeds supporting animal welfare initiatives[3].

The American Museum of the House Cat is a significant cultural institution, blending fascination with history, art, and animals to create an engaging experience for cat lovers and enthusiasts alike.
