In mid-May, after years of work to enhance habitat connectivity across the Flathead Valley and the Salish Mountains, grizzly biologist Wayne Kasworm let the world know that natural genetic connectivity between the Northern Continental Divide and Cabinet-Yaak population units has been confirmed. A male from the NCDE wandered over to the Yaak region, found a mate, and they had a bouncy little cub. This is the second NCDE male to sire a cub in the Yaak, but the first one was trapped and moved rather than taking the initiative himself. It’s a good reminder that restoring natural connectivity between grizzly population units is not only necessary, it’s possible. (fb)
