Tickets for LA have already sold out and Chicago's are selling fast – book yours now at: chicagofairtrade.org/events/fair-trade-dinner-party Deep in the forests of Sri Lanka, shading the dappled forest floor, are the rubber trees that give Earthfoam mattresses their comfy bounce. Most mattresses, mattress toppers, and pillows are made from polyurethane: a synthetic material that is cheap to produce, but is nearly impossible to recycle, highly flammable, and poses a number of potential health risks. Earthfoam’s products, on the other hand, are made from natural latex – a material known for its exceptional durability and comfort. In their quest to create the perfect foam rubber, Earthfoam traced the highest quality raw materials to their source. Sri Lanka has one of the oldest rubber tree industries in the world, but Earthfoam wasn’t satisfied with the lack of transparency of existing suppliers. So the company built its own fair trade network of 323 individual small farmers employing more than 1,200 workers (and counting). Every one of these farms is certified organic, which reduces water and energy use and boosts the biodiversity of the forests. The company also processes the rubber tree sap (natural latex) at its own factory in Sri Lanka, so they know it doesn’t contain fillers and all of their workers earn a living wage. As a Fair for Life certified company, Earthfoam pays into a Development Fund for their factory workers, farmers, and tappers in Sri Lanka. They are the ones who decide how to spend it. Earthfoam’s mattresses are made of natural organic rubber, organic wool, and organic cotton: chosen for their quality, collected ethically, and assembled with care in their own factory in Niles, just outside of Chicago.
