Blacks In Government
Blacks in Government is mandated to promote equity, excellence and opportunity through employee advocacy, professional development and empowerment of African-Americans and others dedicated to justice and equity at all levels of government.
Blacks In Government
Blacks In Government (BIG) is a nonprofit organization established in 1975 by a group of African American employees at the Public Health Services, which is part of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (now known as the Department of Health and Human Services) in Rockville, Maryland. It was incorporated as a nonprofit entity in the District of Columbia jurisdiction in 1976[2][5]. The organization's primary mission is to promote equity, excellence, and opportunity through employee advocacy, professional development, and empowerment of African Americans and others dedicated to justice and equity at all levels of government[1][5].
Mission and Objectives
BIG functions primarily as a volunteer membership-driven association that serves as an employee support group, community resource, and advocate for equal opportunity and professional development for Black government employees[4]. Its purpose extends across local, state, and federal government levels, addressing the employment challenges faced by African American civil servants. By organizing around issues of mutual concern, BIG uses collective strength to confront workplace and community issues[5].
History
Blacks In Government was initially formed to address the needs of Black Civil Service employees who faced racially-related employment problems. It quickly became apparent that similar challenges existed at the state, county, and municipal levels, leading BIG to expand its scope to support African American government employees across different levels of administration[2].
Activities and Impact
BIG has been a national response to the need for African Americans in public service to organize and advocate for their rights. The organization provides mechanisms for inclusion, growth, and advocacy, aiming to promote equity in all aspects of American life, excellence in public service, and opportunities for all Americans[5]. Despite challenges such as government training funding cuts, BIG remains committed to its mission through initiatives like the National Training Institute, which supports professional development[3].
BIG's structure includes various chapters, such as the William D. Barber, Jr. Chapter at EPA Headquarters, which was established over thirty years ago[5]. These chapters helpBIG maintain a strong presence across different government agencies and regions, facilitating its goals through localized support and advocacy.
Structure and Expansion
Blacks In Government operates with a board of directors and various regional representatives who handle governance and oversight. The organization has grown significantly since its inception and now has a broader scope that includes supporting not only federal but also state and local government employees[2][4].
Overall, BIG's work is critical in advocating for equity and supporting professional development among African American government employees, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable public service environment.
