In honor of National Cancer Survivor's Day, we're sharing our VP of Program Operations Michael Wrigglesworth's reflections from his visit to Tanzania: "Earlier this year I was able to meet a woman in Tanzania who's received three different treatments from Max since 2003. Since we both started with Max that year, I asked if we could take a picture together as the “2003 club”. This longevity is fairly unique to Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML), but it glosses over a more nuanced reality: cancer is messy. "I spoke with three different patients who had been receiving treatment from Max for several years and all told me about their complicated journeys. From a spouse leaving one patient upon hearing of the diagnosis to another patient experiencing deep depression, these individuals have survived not only due to receiving multiple lines of treatment, but because they were also able to access the information and community they needed. "'Health System Strengthening'” and 'patient-centered care' mean many people for many years being dedicated enough to learn about all the different challenges a cancer diagnosis brings and working together to tackle them. Funders, advocates, doctors, experts and the patients themselves have a role to play. This month we had the honor of visiting our long-standing partner, the Yeolyan Hematology and Oncology Center, Ministry of Health of Armenia in Yerevan. Since 2003, our collaboration has helped bring hope and healing to over 900 patients facing cancer and blood diseases. Dr. Hayk Grigoryan and his dedicated team warmly welcomed our CEO Pat Garcia-Gonzalez and accompanying team members. Together, we’ve worked to ensure access to life-extending treatments—including medications for chronic myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, and lung cancer—as well as essential diagnostic tools like PCR testing. 🏥 During our visit, we toured the center’s new facilities, including the Aryan Bank building and the bone marrow transplant department. We were deeply moved to receive a letter of gratitude and the Professor R. Yeolyan Memorial Medal, a symbol of our shared commitment to saving lives. 🤝 This partnership is built on a simple but powerful belief: no one should be left behind because they can’t afford treatment.
