Indianapolis Film Project, Inc.
Overview
Indianapolis Film Project, Inc. is a U.S. nonprofit organization based in Indianapolis, Indiana, operating under the name Kan-Kan Cinema. Its mission is to enrich the city's culture through independent film exhibition, film education, and community engagement. The organization showcases a diverse range of films, including local and international productions, documentaries, and classic films, primarily at its 3-screen arthouse theater, the Kan-Kan Cinema.
History
The concept of Kan-Kan Cinema began in the early 2000s with a group of friends, including Tom Battista, his son Ed, Sam Sutphin, and his son Ben. Inspired by independent movie theaters in other cities, they envisioned a similar cultural institution for Indianapolis. After a chance meeting with pop-up film exhibitors Daniel Jacobson and Dusty Frey, the team developed plans for a new theater. However, due to soil issues, they relocated their plans to a new site.
Operations
The organization powers the Kan-Kan Cinema, which hosts panel discussions, film presentations, and community events. It also exhibits films in underserved communities and supports other local artistic initiatives. During the pandemic, despite the initial closure of the Kan-Kan Cinema, the organization delivered its mission through workshops, private screenings, and streaming opportunities for its members.
Mission
Indianapolis Film Project, Inc. aims to create a safe and welcoming space for shared cinematic experiences, fostering meaningful conversations within the community. By showcasing films not typically found in commercial cinemas, the organization broadens the city's cultural landscape.
Governance
As of 2021, the board of directors included Sam Sutphin, Thomas E Battista, Edward D Battista, Ben Sutphin, Jon Vickers, Jerald Harkness, and Katherine Campbell. Samuel B. Sutphin serves as the President of the organization.
Financials
In 2022, the organization reported a revenue of $801,575.
Impact
Indianapolis Film Project, Inc. enriches the community by providing unique cinematic experiences and supporting local artistic initiatives. Its efforts have contributed to revitalizing the surrounding neighborhood, where the Kan-Kan Cinema is located, encouraging new businesses and community development.
