Keith Highlanders Pipe Band Inc.

Overview

The Keith Highlanders Pipe Band Inc. is a nonprofit organization founded in 1952 by members of the Seattle Pipe Band. It was formed by G. Colin Buchan, Robin Buchan, and Carlton Wilds, who established the band with permission from the 10th Earl of Kintore to wear the Keith tartan and cap badge. The organization has operated continuously since its inception as a performance and competition band.

History

The Keith Highlanders Pipe Band was formally incorporated as a nonprofit in 1963. Initially, the band focused on performances at local and regional events, including parades, celebrations, and military functions during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. In the late 1970s, the band introduced a casual uniform to complement its formal quasi-military attire for more informal events.

In the 2000s, the band increased its participation in competitions, including trips to Scotland for the World Pipe Band Championships. During this period, the band was honored with "The Chief's Award," established by Lord Kintore in 2002 to recognize outstanding contributions to the band.

Uniforms

Historically, the band wore a formal uniform consisting of a tunic, plaid, cross belts, spats, military horsehair sporrans, feather bonnets, or glengarries. By 2008, the band ceased using the formal military-style uniform due to costs, adopting a simpler uniform with a glengarry, white shirt, band tie, black jacket, black sporran, charcoal hose, and ghillie brogues.

Competitions and Performances

The band competes primarily in Grade 4, although it briefly maintained a Grade 3 band between 2006 and 2008. Notable achievements include competing at the World Pipe Band Championships in Scotland multiple times and guest performances at events like the Kentucky Highland Games.

In 2018, the band was upgraded to competing in both Grade 3 and Grade 4 competitions by the British Columbia Pipers' Association. The band continues to engage in local performances and events, maintaining its role as a cultural ambassador for the Clan Keith.

Community and Fundraising

The band hosts various events, including whisky tastings, to support its activities. These events contribute to the band's financial stability and community engagement.

Legacy

The Keith Highlanders Pipe Band remains an integral part of the Seattle community, preserving traditional Scottish piping and cultural heritage through its performances and educational activities.
