Midwest Honor Flight

Midwest Honor Flight is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to honoring American veterans by providing them with all-expense-paid trips to Washington, D.C. to visit their respective memorials. The organization primarily serves veterans from Northwest Iowa, the entire state of South Dakota, Northeast Nebraska, and Southwest Minnesota.

Mission and Purpose

The mission of Midwest Honor Flight is to honor and thank veterans, particularly those from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, by giving them the opportunity to see their memorials at no personal expense. The organization aims to provide respect, honor, and closure for these veterans, acknowledging their sacrifices and service to the nation.

Priorities and Eligibility

Midwest Honor Flight gives top priority to World War II veterans and terminally ill veterans from all wars. Following this, priority is given to Korean War veterans and those who served during peacetime between WWII and Korea, followed by Vietnam War veterans and those who served during peacetime between Korea and Vietnam.

Operations and Funding

The organization operates entirely on donations from individuals and corporate sponsors, receiving no government funding. It is noted that 94 cents of every dollar donated directly supports the trips for local veterans. Each trip costs approximately $853 per veteran, which covers all expenses including flights, meals, and transportation in Washington, D.C.

Flights and Governance

Veterans are transported from the Sioux Falls Regional Airport. Flights are conducted on a "first-come, first-served basis," with priority given to the aforementioned groups. Guardians accompany veterans on flights to provide assistance, ensuring a safe and memorable experience.

Achievements

To date, Midwest Honor Flight has successfully flown over 1,994 veterans on 23 missions, with more than 600 veterans currently on the waiting list. The organization relies heavily on community support and donations to continue its mission.

Recognition and Legal Status

As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit (EIN: 82-0995083), all donations to Midwest Honor Flight are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
