The Friends of Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge is a volunteer group dedicated to helping the Refuge protect Hawaii's native birds and flora. To support native Hawaiian forest habitats such as Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge in terms of restoring, protecting, and conserving biological diversity at both the Hakalau and Kona Forest Units. Particular emphasis is focused on saving endangered bird and plant species, while simultaneously providing wildlife-dependent recreation such as wildlife observation and photography, environmental education and interpretation, cultural experiences, and scientific research.

Friends of Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge A nonprofit devoted to conserving the unique flora and fauna of Hawaii Island Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge established in 1985 by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service consists of two distinct parcels. The Hakalau Forest Unit is a 32830 acre parcel on the windward slopes of Mauna Kea on Hawaii Island.
