Overview
Friends of the Homestead Cemetery is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and preserving Homestead Cemetery, a historical site located in Munhall, Pennsylvania. The organization plays a pivotal role in organizing events, fundraising campaigns, and community outreach programs aimed at maintaining and honoring the cemetery.
History and Mission
Homestead Cemetery, first incorporated in 1886, holds significant historical importance as it serves as a memorial ground for individuals who shaped the local community, including those involved in significant historical events such as the Civil War, the Homestead Steel Strike, World War II, and the Civil Rights movement. The Friends of the Homestead Cemetery contribute to these efforts by working towards restoring the cemetery to a state of self-sustainability and ensuring its continued role as a historical and cultural landmark.
Activities and Events
The organization is involved in various activities to achieve its mission:
- Meetings and Planning: Friends of the Homestead Cemetery meet regularly to discuss accomplishments and plan future events and fundraising strategies. These meetings are generally held on the final Wednesday of specific months and are open to all interested parties.
- Community Events: The group organizes significant community events throughout the year. One notable event is Wreaths Across America, which honors veterans buried at the cemetery.
- Fundraising: The organization sells items like t-shirts, hoodies, stickers, and decals, with a portion of the proceeds supporting the cemetery's maintenance and improvement projects.
Impact
Through their efforts, the Friends of the Homestead Cemetery not only contribute to the physical upkeep of the cemetery but also foster community engagement and pride in local history. Their initiatives help preserve the memory of the individuals buried there and ensure the cemetery remains a vibrant and meaningful part of the community.

It has not faltered in its duty of honor and remembrance to the community as it has witnessed dramatic change over the last century and beyond. The members of our community who rest peacefully within its grounds have shaped the neighboring boroughs in events from the Civil War the 1892 Homestead Steel Strike the Great Depression and the Second World War. The cemetery has also witnessed the dramatic demographic changes of the country over the past hundred years and as such men and women who fought for racial and social justice from the Negro League in baseball to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s are remembered as integral parts of our region.
