Critically Endangered Black Rhino Update Following our video on Endangered Species Day, which shared the story of Andy—the black rhino calf with an injured foot, the care team is excited to bring you an update. Six months since his final treatment and from the safety of the vehicle (showing a healthy respect for his very protective Mom!) the team were able to check in on Andy’s progress and capture this footage. As you’ll see, he healed beautifully and is growing so fast! What a handsome, confident boy he’s becoming. We’re incredibly proud of his Mom, Phoebe, an orphaned rhino who was rescued, rehabilitated, and released. **New Calf Update:** Our newest admission, rescued on Saturday, is currently being cared for in our Juvenile ICU. Veterinarian Dr. Chris Smith visited her to do a full check-up. She was given IV nutritional support to help her through this critical initial adaptation period. Over the last ten years of rehabilitating rhino orphans, we’ve seen how calves around this age can really struggle with the stress and trauma of losing their moms. They can quickly fall into depression and refuse to eat or find it hard to adjust to natural grasses and supplementary foods. This can quickly lead to a drop in condition and further complications. This IV nutrition will help support her as she begins her rehabilitation journey and give her body the time and strength it needs to adapt.
