TEXAS AND SURROUNDING AREAS (or owners who are willing to drive) We need borzoi OVER 10, willing to do a holter and then go to A&M for an echo/ecg. Expenses covered at A&M. You do not have to be a breeder - pet borzoi are happily accepted to this study! We need a few more normal control borzoi to finalized the genetic study results (fb)

❣️BORZOI CARDIAC RESEARCH ❣️ The genetics and cardiology team at Texas A&M have found some really exciting preliminary mutations of interest in the borzoi already sequenced, but they need more samples now to get things narrowed down enough to be able to publish. If you own or know of a DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) Borzoi ANYWHERE in the world that is appropriately diagnosed with DCM and have an echo report they can review to confirm the diagnosis, please message me or email me at sataraborzoi@gmail.com so I can put you in touch with Dr. Wesselowski. She will ship DNA kits to you. If your borzoi is diagnosed with DCM and/or an arrhythmia, it is strongly recommended to get a baseline 6 to 12 lead ECG (electrocardiogram) with a cardiologist (if possible). Please see the paper attached that describes the changes that your veterinary cardiologist should be looking for. This is new research, no one has been looking for these changes in dogs (they are known in humans) so your cardiologist needs to know specifically they are looking for unique (long QTs and ST segment) abnormalities. If you are able to have this done and confirm the abnormalities are present, we desperately need those DNA samples as well. Remember, we are also still accepting hearts from ALL borzoi - those who experienced sudden death, were diagnosed with DCM prior to death, and normal borzoi. A link to the Valentines Fund can be found below. Sudden cardiac death in a borzoi is a heartbreaking experience. I have no doubt that we can come together as a global community to unravel the mystery of it. Thank you all again for your participation, each and every sample has mattered, and it is because of this great community coming together that the research has already come so far. If you would like more info on the Texas A&M sighthound sudden death DNA research project and how you can participate, please visit: https://studypages.com/s/genetics-of-inherited-heart-disease-in-borzoi-dogs-and-other-sighthound-breeds-815394/ If you are interested in renting a holter monitor for your borzoi, or participating in borzoi sudden death heart necropsy research, please visit the holter and Valentine’s Fund links at www.borzoihealth.org Danielle Snyder Steenkamp, DVM Borzoi Health and Welfare Foundation (fb)

The BHWF is an independent charitable foundation whose mission is to improve the life health and longevity of the borzoi. We are a 501c3 nonprofit and all donations are tax deductible. Our EIN is 812383230 Borzoi Health and Welfare Foundation a 501c3 organization The purpose of the BHWF is to provide fanciers with tax deductible charitable outlets for research into the overall health and welfare of the breed as well as solutions to provide aid to members of our community in case of fire flood tragedy or other disaster. We felt that there was a gap in fundraising efforts for health research and breed welfare issues and after years of collaboration with multiple breeders veterinarians fanciers and rescuers the BHWF was created to fulfill those specific needs with one tax deductible solution.
