Following several meetings and other organizational efforts Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated Gamma Alpha Psi Zeta Chapter was chartered in Kankakee Illinois in the year of the Zeta Phi Beta Centennial celebrations on December 15 2020. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated honors Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, as an historic moment in American history. On June 19, 1865, news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached the last enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas, marking the true beginning of freedom for all. We proudly recognize the efforts of our own trailblazing Soror, Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” whose unwavering advocacy helped make Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday in 2021.
