Transportation Communications Union

The Transportation Communications Union (TCU) is a nonprofit labor union designated as a 501(c)5 organization, operating in the United States. Created for the purpose of improving working conditions and efficiency, the union is primarily composed of members from the transportation sector, including the railroad industry.

History

TCU affiliated with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) in 2012, significantly expanding its presence and opportunities for members within various industries. This merger allowed for collaborative training programs and representation across several sectors, including the aerospace industry.

Membership and Representation

The TCU represents approximately 35,000 to 50,000 members nationwide, with a diverse workforce that includes roles such as clerks, auto technicians, government workers, and more. The union's members are primarily employed in railroads, airlines, bus, and trucking companies. TCU works to negotiate wages, benefits, and working conditions for its members, often through the National Railroad Labor Conference (NRLC).

Training Initiatives

The TCU/IAM offers an Advanced Training Program, which has collaborated with the U.S. Department of Labor's Job Corps since 1971. This program focuses on preparing students for high-wage employment opportunities across various transportation industries.

Leadership and Governance

As of recent reports, the leadership includes National President Arthur P. Maratea. The union's governance and activities are guided by its members, with the strength of the union being directly proportional to member participation.

Financial Operations

TCU generates revenue mainly from program services, with significant portions also coming from investment income and royalties. Executive compensation and other salaries and wages form a substantial part of its expenses. Despite its nonprofit status, donations to TCU are not tax-deductible.

Affiliations and Activities

TCU/IAM is affiliated with the AFL-CIO, a federation of labor unions, enhancing its influence and reach within the broader labor movement. The union's activities are centered around improving job conditions, securing better pay and benefits, and fostering a strong collective voice for its diverse membership base.
