Glazer Children's Museum
The Glazer Children's Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing hands-on learning experiences for families, particularly focusing on early childhood education. Located in downtown Tampa, Florida, it has become a pivotal part of the cultural corridor in Tampa Bay, alongside other prominent museums, libraries, and performing arts centers.
History
The museum's history begins with the inception of Safety Village in Lowry Park in 1965. The organization evolved significantly over the years. Initially, the Children's Museum of Tampa was established in 1986 and operated from a small storefront before relocating to a site near the city zoo in 1989, where it was known as Kid City. This outdoor facility simulated a small town and provided community-centric education for over 750,000 visitors. However, limitations in size and functionality prompted planning for a new state-of-the-art museum. After a $22 million capital campaign, construction began in March 2009, and the Glazer Children's Museum opened on September 25, 2010. It was named in honor of the Glazer Family Foundation, which provided significant funding.
Exhibits and Programs
The museum is housed in a 53,000-square-foot facility featuring 12 themed galleries and over 170 interactive exhibits. These exhibits are designed to foster imagination, creativity, and a sense of place among children, aligning with educational standards like the Sunshine State Standards. Popular exhibits include the Engineers' Workshop, Safety Village's Firehouse, KidsPort, and Tugboat Tots for toddlers. The museum also hosts traveling exhibits, which enhance its diverse offerings.
mission
The mission of the Glazer Children's Museum is to create learning environments where children engage in playful discovery, connecting with the world to develop as lifelong learners and leaders. The museum emphasizes hands-on experiences, role-playing, and exploration, catering to children aged 1 to 10 years old.
Awards and Recognition
The Glazer Children's Museum has received several awards and recognitions for its educational outreach and community impact, including the Diversity and Inclusion Award from the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs and being named Non-Profit of the Year by the Tampa Bay Business Journal.
Financial Support
As a non-profit organization, the museum relies on private support and donations for about 40% of its funding, with the remainder coming from admissions and special programs. The organization is grateful for corporate and foundation supporters who contribute to its mission of providing enriching play experiences.
Community Impact
The museum attracts approximately 200,000 visitors annually, contributing to the economic growth of the Tampa Bay area while fostering healthy interactions and educational experiences for its community. It collaborates with local organizations to deliver essential programs and services.
