Did you know?!?! What is an Accessory Dwelling Unit? An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a small (max 750 square feet) studio or 1-bedroom residence with its own kitchen and bathroom. ADUs share a residential lot with a primary single-family residence and help provide a wider variety of housing options while preserving neighborhood character. Here is what you need to know about ADUs: •An ADU application and a building permit are required. •ADUs are permitted in all residential, commercial, or mixed-use zoning districts and can be located within, attached to, or detached from the primary single-family residence. •A deed restriction is required stating that either the primary unit or the ADU is owner-occupied. •ADUs must be compatible in design with the primary residence and must be accessible from the street as the primary residence is addressed. , For more information, see Pocatello City Code §17.06.100. Preservation Highlight – Relight the Night Downtown Pocatello was once illuminated by an impressive collection of neon signs, rivaling those found in much larger cities. However, as suburban development expanded between the 1950s and 1980s, the energy, identity, and foot traffic that once defined downtown began to fade. This decline led to the loss of many historic structures and the dimming of iconic neon signs. In response, a movement emerged to protect and restore what remained. The establishment of the Downtown Historic District in 1983 and the Business Improvement District in 1991 marked a turning point, sparking a downtown renaissance. Throughout the years, local businesses such as Maag’s Rx and Molinelli’s Jewelers helped preserve this neon legacy by keeping their historic signs glowing. On June 20, 2012, the Historic Downtown Pocatello Foundation launched an ambitious and symbolic effort called Relight the Night—a project aimed at restoring the city’s vintage neon signs and celebrating their cultural and historical significance. The first success came on November 29, 2013, when the iconic Chief Theatre sign was relit. Since then, 21 more signs have been restored, lighting up Pocatello’s streets with history and charm: Chief Theatre – 2013 Pocatello Electric – 2013 Bangs Stationers – 2014 Whitman Hotel – 2014 Greyhound Bus Depot – 2015 Meyers Shoe Repair – 2015 Odd Fellows Hall IOOF – 2015 Chopstick Café – 2016 (currently in storage) PHS Indian – 2016 The Paris – 2017 Office Bar & Grill – 2018 Bannock Memorial Star – 2018 Teamsters Local 983 – 2018 Hotel Yellowstone – 2018 Fred’s Photo Service – 2019 Ukiah Rexall Drug – 2019 Buster Brown Shoes – 2020 Oasis Bar – 2021 210 Club – 2021 Eagles Aerie 119 – 2022 Purpose – 2022 Coming this summer: On July 11–12, Relight the Night will host Pocatello’s first-ever Neon Fest—a celebration featuring guided tours of restored signs and the official relighting of the Idaho Motel sign, marking the 22nd restoration. To learn more about the initiative or get involved, visit: Relight the Night – Historic Downtown Pocatello As Randy Dixon, Chairman of Relight the Night, puts it best: “As long as our historic signs shine brightly every night, the history that surrounds them can never be forgotten.” (fb)
