International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees
Overview
The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) is a prominent North American labor union, representing over 168,000 technicians, artisans, and craftspersons across various segments of the entertainment industry. This includes live theater, motion picture and television production, trade shows, television broadcasting, concerts, and the equipment and construction shops that support these sectors in the United States and its territories, as well as Canada.
History
IATSE was founded on July 17, 1893, when stagehands from eleven cities convened in New York. The union's initial goal was to support efforts to establish fair wages and working conditions for its members. Initially known as the National Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, it evolved to incorporate additional crafts and technologies within the entertainment industry.
During its formative years, the union primarily focused on theater stagehands. However, it soon expanded to include film projectionists, starting in 1908. By the late 1940s, as commercial television began to grow, IATSE adapted further to include workers in this new field. The union has continued to embrace new technologies and crafts, maintaining its position as a leading force in the entertainment industry.
Structure and Governance
The supreme governing body of IATSE is the Quadrennial Convention, where delegates elected by local unions review organizational progress, affirm or alter policies, and plan for the future. Between conventions, governance is overseen by the General Executive Board, consisting of the International President, General Secretary-Treasurer, and thirteen Vice Presidents.
Membership and Benefits
To become a member of IATSE, interested individuals must contact the appropriate local union covering their specific craft. Members benefit from union contracts that guarantee wages, hours, benefits, safety guidelines, and other agreements. Additionally, IATSE members receive benefits through Union Plus, a program offering savings and discounts to union members.
Impact and Achievements
IATSE has played a significant role in securing high wages and favorable working conditions for its members. It has continued to expand its membership despite a general decline in private sector union membership across the United States. The union's adaptability and willingness to incorporate new crafts have been instrumental in its success.
Local Unions and Departments
IATSE comprises over 500 local unions, each representing various crafts and industries. Key departments include Stagecraft, Motion Picture and Television Production, Organizing, Trade Show and Display Work, Canadian Affairs, Communications, Education and Training, and Broadcast.
Conclusion
The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees remains a vital force in the North American entertainment industry, committed to protecting the rights and improving the economic conditions of its diverse membership while adapting to emerging technologies and industry trends.
