Andrea Jenkins made history in 2017 when she became the first openly Black transgender woman elected to public office in the United States, serving on the Minneapolis City Council. Jenkins' political career has been marked by her unwavering commitment to justice. She has worked to ensure that schools are not just places of learning, but spaces of belonging - where all students can see themselves in their teachers, textbooks and elected officials.
