This week we spent some time with Denver District 8 City Councilwoman Shontel Lewis and her team, on a tour of the Mosaic Community Campus, at the edge of the South Park Hill and East Colfax neighborhoods. CW Lewis has personal connections to many of the orgs on the campus; we shared how these organizations complement and enrich each other and the community through education, job training, affordable housing and more. Designed for the community, by the community. After arson at Holly Square in 2008, ULC acquired the 2.6-acre site, ensuring that its future would be shaped by the people who call Northeast Park Hill home. With the support of HARP and @tdfcommunity (The Denver Foundation), an extensive community engagement process determined that this space should be transformed into a vibrant hub for youth development, health equity, and economic opportunity.   Today, Holly Square is home to @bgcmetrodenver and the Center for African American Health, which provide essential resources to families in one of Denver’s few remaining historically Black neighborhoods. The redevelopment of Holly Square was not just about rebuilding but also about preserving community spaces and ensuring long-term affordability.   ULC’s community land trust holds the property under a 99-year renewable ground lease, protecting it from speculation and gentrification while securing it for community-serving uses for future generations.
