La Leche League International Inc. (LLLI) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting breastfeeding globally. History

La Leche League was founded in 1956 by seven women: Marian Thompson, Mary White, Mary Ann Cahill, Edwina Froehlich, Mary Ann Kerwin, Viola Lennon, and Betty Wagner. Initially, the focus was on countering the prevalent bottle-feeding practices of the time, as only about 20% of U.S. mothers were breastfeeding then. The first formal meeting took place on October 17, 1956, in Franklin Park, Illinois. By 1964, the organization expanded internationally, becoming La Leche League International, Inc. (LLLI) with groups in Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand.

Mission and Operations

LLLI's mission is to provide mother-to-mother support and promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as a vital element in the healthy development of both the baby and the mother. The organization offers various resources and training for lactation consultants and breastfeeding advocates. LLLI supports breastfeeding in diverse family settings, acknowledging the importance of breastfeeding in social cultures where it is often undervalued.

Expansion and Recognition

In 1981, LLLI was granted consultative status with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). This recognition highlighted the organization's efforts to support breastfeeding globally. Additionally, LLLI has played a key role in establishing certification programs for lactation consultants, furthering their mission.

While La Leche League USA (LLL USA) was established in 2009 following an internal reorganization, La Leche League International, Inc. continues to operate globally. There are about 89 countries where LLLI is present, reflecting the organization's commitment to supporting breastfeeding families worldwide.
