Downriver Chess Club of New Orleans

The Downriver Chess Club of New Orleans is a nonprofit organization focused on promoting chess within the local community. The club hosts various chess events and tournaments, welcoming participants of all ages and skill levels.

Activities

• Regular Meetups: The club holds regular meetups three times a week, typically on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. These sessions include rated tournaments and casual "skittles" games for those interested in playing without the competitive aspect.

• Tournament Formats:

  • Monday evenings feature four rounds of G/15 chess, a rapid format where each player has 15 minutes for the entire game.
  • Tuesday evenings are designed for longer games with a G/90 format, where each player has 90 minutes to make all their moves, and a delay of five minutes for the first few moves.
  • Thursday evenings also follow a G/15 format.

• Scholastic Tournaments: In addition to general tournaments, the club organizes scholastic events specifically for K-12 students.

Events

The club occasionally hosts larger tournaments on weekends, which are open to players of all ages. These larger events are part of their broader efforts to foster a strong chess community in New Orleans.

Membership and Participation

US Chess Federation (USCF) membership is required for participation in rated tournaments, but the club also accommodates casual players without such membership.
