Scientists created a high-quality genetic map of the white oak tree (Quercus alba), showing its complete set of DNA arranged in chromosomes. They compared this tree's genes with those of other oak species to understand how oaks evolved over time. Their research found that most of the chromosomes stayed the same, but some genes—especially those related to plant defense—changed quickly. This discovery helps scientists learn more about oak forests, how trees adapt, and their genetic history. This message brought to you by the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council. Rooted in History: The Morgan Tree Standing tall atop the ancient Indian Mound on the UT Knoxville Agricultural Campus, the Morgan Tree — a majestic white oak — has silently witnessed generations of agriculture students pass beneath its branches since around 1904. The Indian Mound and the surrounding Agricultural Campus property was purchased in a separate tract in 1904 and became the home base for the UT Institute of Agriculture 50 years ago. Named after Dr. Harcourt Morgan — scientist, UT President, and TVA Director — the Morgan Tree connects our past, present, and future. Its acorns, now part of a UT genetic research project, will one day help reforest Tennessee through the state’s Tree Nursery program. Thanks to Dr. Scott Schlarbaum’s nomination, this remarkable white oak is now officially recognized as a Historic Tree, a living symbol of our heritage.
