Road Runners Club of America
The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting distance running in the United States. Founded on February 22, 1958, it serves as the oldest and largest national association of running organizations and runners.
Mission and Vision
The RRCA's mission is to champion the development of community-based running clubs and events that serve runners of all ages and abilities in pursuit of health and competition. The organization's vision is to see organized and active running clubs and events in every community.
History
The RRCA was established as an alternative to the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), the then-current governing body for amateur sports in the U.S. It was founded to provide a more open and organized structure for distance running. Early milestones include the hosting of the first RRCA National Championship races in 1958 and the promotion of women's running through pioneering events like the first women's marathon championship in 1970.
Programs and Initiatives
- Coaching Certification: The RRCA offers coaching certifications to accredit coaches specializing in training long-distance runners.
- National Championships: Organizes national, regional, and state championship event series.
- Road Scholars Program: Provides grants for promising post-collegiate athletes.
- Kids Run the Nation Program: Offers a 10-week youth running program curriculum and small grant funds for starting and maintaining youth running programs.
- Runner Friendly Community Program: Identifies and promotes communities that support recreational running.
- National Running Awards: Recognizes outstanding contributions to the running community.
Structure
The organization is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, and has a membership of over 180,000 individuals through its network of more than 1,500 running clubs and events across the United States. The RRCA's policy-making power is vested in its member clubs, who vote at annual meetings. A 9-member Board of Directors, elected by the membership, helps govern the organization.
Accomplishments
The RRCA has played a critical role in promoting women's running and advocating for equal opportunities in distance running events. It has also supported the development of numerous running clubs nationwide, offering liability insurance and other benefits to its members.
American Long Distance Running Hall of Fame
Established in 1971, the Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the sport of long-distance running.
