Toastmasters International
The mission of a Toastmasters Club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.
Toastmasters International
Toastmasters International (TI) is a US-headquartered nonprofit educational organization dedicated to helping individuals develop communication, public speaking, and leadership skills. It operates worldwide through a network of local clubs.
History
The concept of Toastmasters began when Dr. Ralph C. Smedley, a 1903 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University, started a speech training program for young men at the Bloomington YMCA in Illinois in 1905. This early initiative aimed to improve speech and leadership abilities through short speeches, debates, and chairmanship training. However, the first formal Toastmasters club was founded by Dr. Smedley on October 22, 1924, at the YMCA in Santa Ana, California. Initially, the organization focused on young men, but it began admitting women in 1973. The first international chapter was established in Vancouver, Canada, in 1932.
Organization and Structure
Toastmasters International uses a club-based structure, with an average club size of about 20 to 30 members. Meetings typically occur weekly or biweekly and last about one to two hours, often conducted in the evening. Each club operates as a separate entity, with specific requirements for achieving chartered status as an official Toastmasters club. Chartered clubs are allowed to use the organization's name and materials.
Every meeting includes structured speeches followed by feedback from more experienced members, helping speakers refine their skills. Meetings also feature Table Topics, which involve impromptu speeches designed to test quick thinking and response skills. Key roles within a club include:
- Chairman: Opens and leads the initial part of the meeting.
- Toastmaster: Oversees the bulk of the meeting and introduces speakers.
- Table Topics Master: Prepares questions for impromptu speeches.
- Evaluator: Provides constructive feedback on speeches.
- Timer: Ensures adherence to time limits for speeches.
- Grammarian: Monitors and corrects grammatical errors during meetings.
Education Programs
Toastmasters emphasizes developing public speaking and leadership skills through various education programs:
- Pathways: This modern learning experience offers eleven paths focusing on public speaking, interpersonal communication, management, strategic leadership, and confidence. Each path consists of 14 projects, with materials available in multiple languages.
- Speechcraft: A four-to-eight-week program led by experienced Toastmasters to help non-members develop speaking skills.
- Competent Communication Manual: A foundational program that guides members in presenting ten speeches to improve basic speaking skills.
Mission and Core Values
Toastmasters International aims to empower individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders through a supportive and positive learning environment. Its core values include:
- Integrity: Acting truthfully and reliably.
- Respect: Treating others with dignity and welcoming diverse perspectives.
- Service: Providing high-value support.
- Excellence: Striving to exceed expectations and innovate solutions.
Impact and Reach
As of recent years, Toastmasters International has more than 270,000 members across over 14,000 clubs in numerous countries. It continues to grow as a leading organization for personal and professional development in communication and leadership skills.
