Simple. Entrepreneurial. Community-based. Literacy is the key. Lettered Africa is a simple, entrepreneurial, community-based approach to solving the problem of illiteracy in sub-Saharan Africa. Our goal is to make written English as broadly accessible as possible and create a thriving culture of literacy.Throughout sub-Saharan Africa, education is highly valued, but most communities have very few options for its attainment. Good education in written English is in particularly high demand. We hope to meet this demand by creating a network of tutors who will be able to support themselves financially by teaching their neighbors how to read.In order to do this, we are crafting a simple, systematic, phonics-based English literacy curriculum that is intended specifically to meet the needs of African English-speakers. Once the curriculum has been completed in mid-2018, we will launch it on the ground from our base in Lusaka, Zambia. We will begin training literacy tutors who can then begin working in their local communities.In addition to simply teaching literacy, each tutor will also be equipped to train other tutors. The tutors they train will then give back a certain percentage of their earnings as compensation for the training and mentorship they have received. In this way, we will be creating an economic incentive to spread literacy across as many communities as possible.Once Lettered Africa has been established in Zambia, we will be able to begin expanding into neighboring countries. We hope that one day Lettered Africa will spread throughout all of sub-Saharan Africa.
