Knights of Columbus
The Knights of Columbus is a global Catholic fraternal service order with significant presence in the United States. Founded on March 29, 1882, by Blessed Michael J. McGivney, the organization has grown into one of the largest Catholic fraternal organizations worldwide, dedicated to promoting charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism among its members.
History
The Knights of Columbus was established as a mutual benefit society primarily for working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States. From its inception, the organization focused on providing financial security through an insurance system while also engaging in charitable activities. Over time, it has expanded its mission to support various social causes, Catholic education, and humanitarian efforts globally.
Charitable and Social Activities
Charity is a core principle of the Knights of Columbus, with extensive involvement in projects including:
- Disaster Relief: Providing aid to victims of natural disasters, such as floods and earthquakes, dating back to the early 1900s.
- Refugee Support: Offering assistance to persecuted Christians and other minorities in regions like the Middle East, and more recently, aiding refugees affected by the Ukraine conflict.
- Health Initiatives: The organization has funded numerous health programs, including the distribution of ultrasound machines to pregnancy centers across the U.S. and Canada.
- Education and Scholarships: Supporting seminarians and students through various scholarship programs.
- Community Assistance: Initiatives like Coats for Kids, which has donated over 1 million coats to needy children, reflect the organization's commitment to local community service.
Organizational Structure
The Knights of Columbus operates through more than 17,000 local councils worldwide, with over 2.1 million members as of 2024. The organization is structured around four degrees, each emphasizing one of the core principles. Membership is open to practicing Catholic men, while women and boys can participate through associated groups like the Columbiettes and Columbian Squires.
Financial Services and Investments
The Knights of Columbus owns a successful insurance company that underwrites life insurance totaling over $121 billion. Additionally, they manage investments through Knights of Columbus Asset Advisors, aligning financial strategies with Catholic social teachings.
Leadership and Governance
Currently, the order is led by Patrick E. Kelly as the Supreme Knight and William E. Lori as the Supreme Chaplain. The Knights of Columbus plays an active role in promoting Catholic values on public policy issues, both domestically and internationally.
Financial Data
As a nonprofit, the Knights of Columbus invests a significant portion of its resources in charitable activities. In 2023, the organization donated $190 million and contributed 47 million volunteer-hours to various charitable projects.
