From October to December, the first half of the project "Under the Wings of an Archangel" was carried out at Naqlun, under the supervision of Dr. Robert Mahler who is affiliated with The Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology UW, Research Centre in Cairo. He and his team spent two months living and working in the contemporary Christian monastery. Though not monks themselves, they found the experience deeply rewarding. Conservators and photographers focused on the narthex of the Church of the Archangel Gabriel, adorned with wall paintings of exceptional beauty. Thanks to their dedicated work, these 11th-century masterpieces—created by various artists—have been revitalized, revealing vivid colors and clear outlines. Those familiar with their earlier condition can now appreciate the transformation. This artistic revival was shared with many weekend visitors. Judging by their mostly Arabic comments, the response was overwhelmingly positive. Funded by ARCE, the project goes beyond conservation. It actively involves the local community in preserving their heritage through student tours, presentations for the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities وزارة السياحة والآثار, and historical discussions with the monastery’s monks. Online outreach also expands its impact, and the mission has multiple accounts on social media for all those interested! Naqlun, on the southeastern edge of the Fayum Oasis, is home to ancient Nekloni—now Deir el-Malak Gabriel—the oldest active monastery in Fayum. Its scenic hills, dotted with ancient hermitages, a ruined central complex, and lower terrace dwellings, reflect a monastic history dating to the 5th century CE. At dusk, visitors climbing the hills can glimpse early monastic life and witness one of the most breathtaking sunsets imaginable.
