Laborers' International Union of North America

The Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA) is a prominent labor union representing over 500,000 workers in the construction industry across the United States and Canada.

History

LIUNA's origins date back to the late 19th century, with the formation of local construction unions. However, it was formally established on April 13, 1903, when various local unions united under the leadership of Samuel Gompers, the President of the American Federation of Labor (AFL), to form the International Hod Carriers and Building Laborers' Union (IHC and BLC). This initial union was founded at a convention in Washington, D.C., attended by delegates from 23 local unions representing 8,186 laborers across 17 cities[1][3].

Over the years, the union underwent several name changes. By 1912, it became known as the International Hod Carriers and Common Laborers of America and later the International Hod Carriers' Building and Common Laborers of America[1][3]. Domenico D'Alessandro, a leader from Boston, played a crucial role in the union's early development, serving as General President from 1908 until his death in 1926[2][3].

In 1965, the union was officially renamed the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA)[4]. This rebranding marked a new era for the union, which had grown significantly by the mid-20th century. During World War II, LIUNA's membership increased dramatically as construction projects expanded to support the war effort[3].

Activities and Impact

Throughout its history, LIUNA has been actively involved in various social and political issues, particularly during the Civil Rights Era. In 1962, LIUNA participated in discussions with President John F. Kennedy to address racial discrimination within labor unions[4]. Members of LIUNA also participated in Martin Luther King Jr.'s March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963[1][4].

The union has continued to advocate for workers' rights, safety standards, and access to health and welfare benefits. It has established numerous programs, including training centers and health services, to enhance the quality of life of its members. In recent years, LIUNA has been a strong voice in political campaigns, often supporting Democratic candidates and advocating for infrastructure development and improved immigration policies[5].

Structure

LIUNA is composed of more than 400 local unions across North America, with 44 district councils and nine regional offices[5]. The international headquarters is located in Washington, D.C., and the union operates under its own constitution, which is amended at general conventions held every five years[5].

Leadership

As of recent updates, Brent Booker serves as the General President of LIUNA[1]. Armand Sabitoni has been a key figure, serving as General Secretary-Treasurer and overseeing several national funds focused on health, safety, and education[5].

Political Involvement

LIUNA is known for its political activism, often aligning with the interests of construction workers and advocating for policies that benefit its members. The union has supported various political campaigns and has been vocal on issues such as healthcare reform and immigration policies[5]. Despite challenges, including past controversies involving leadership, LIUNA remains one of the most influential labor unions in North America.
